An Australian Solo Trekker’s Guide to Everest Base Camp Trekking with a Helicopter Twist
The Everest Base Camp trek is the dream of adventurers worldwide, and as a solo traveller from Australia, I recently embarked on this awe-inspiring journey. From detailed planning to breathtaking views and a dramatic helicopter ride back to Lukla, here’s a complete rundown of my experience and tips for anyone planning their own trek to the roof of the world.
Planning the Journey: Tailored Itinerary for Photography Enthusiasts
Months before my departure, I connected with Suman from Destination Nepal Tours and Travels. After numerous email exchanges, we crafted a personalised itinerary that catered to my passion for photography. The plan was clear: take it slow, avoid trekking after sunset, and make the most of every moment.
Exploring Kathmandu Valley: A Cultural Prelude to the Trek
I arrived in Nepal on 29th September 2024, eager to soak in the cultural richness of the Kathmandu Valley before heading to the Himalayas.
- 30th September: A full-day guided tour of Kathmandu Durbar Square, where centuries-old palaces and temples offered a glimpse into Nepal’s history.
- 1st October: Exploring the artistic treasures of Patan Durbar Square, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
- 2nd October: A visit to Bhaktapur Durbar Square and the sacred Pashupatinath Temple, where ancient traditions thrive.
The Road to Lukla: A Journey through Unpredictability
On 3rd October, a last-minute decision to drive to Manthali Airport turned out to be wise. Floods had disrupted the shortest route, and arriving early ensured a smooth transfer. The next day, 4th October, we were fortunate to fly to Lukla as scheduled, despite heavy delays and cancellations due to poor weather.
The Trek Begins: Step by Step to Everest Base Camp
The trek officially kicked off on 5th October. Here’s how each day unfolded:
- Day 1 (5th October): A scenic trek from Lukla to Phakding, passing through villages and forests.
- Day 2: From Phakding to the vibrant Namche Bazaar, the gateway to Everest.
- Day 3 (7th October): A detour to Khumjung via the iconic Hotel Everest View, offering panoramic Himalayan vistas.
- Day 4: A spiritual stop at Tengboche, home to a famous monastery with jaw-dropping views of Everest.
- Day 5: Ascending to Dingboche, where the landscape shifts to rugged alpine terrain.
- Day 6: An acclimatisation day in Dingboche, exploring the surrounding areas and adapting to the altitude.
- Day 7: Trekking onward to Lobuche, with glaciers and dramatic peaks dominating the view.
- Day 8: A thrilling push to Gorakhshep and onward to Everest Base Camp, the ultimate highlight of the trek.
The Grand Finale: Kalapathar and a Helicopter Ride
On 12th October, I hiked to Kalapathar at sunrise for unparalleled views of Everest before returning to Gorakhshep. Instead of retracing my steps on foot, I opted for a helicopter ride back to Lukla—a decision that added excitement and stunning aerial views of the Himalayas.
The Journey Back to Kathmandu
Weather delays kept me in Lukla until 16th October, when I finally flew to Manthali Airport and drove back to Kathmandu. The next day, I wrapped up my Nepal adventure with a visit to the iconic Swayambhunath Stupa before heading to the airport.
A Big Thank You to Destination Nepal Tours and Travels
This unforgettable experience wouldn’t have been possible without Suman and his team at Destination Nepal Tours and Travels. Their meticulous planning and support ensured a smooth journey, even when unexpected challenges arose.
Tips for Solo Trekkers Planning an EBC Trek

- Pack Light but Smart: Focus on essentials, including layers, good hiking boots, and a camera for the stunning views.
- Acclimatise Gradually: Take extra days to adjust to the altitude for a safer and more enjoyable experience.
- Enjoy Every Moment: The trek is as much about the journey as the destination.
