Itinerary

Your Bhutan Tour begins with a breathtaking flight to Paro, offering spectacular views of the Himalayas. As you land, you’ll be welcomed by Bhutan’s fresh mountain air—a refreshing start to your journey.

After completing immigration and baggage collection, our representative will greet you and transfer you to Thimphu, the vibrant capital of Bhutan. Along the way, we’ll stop at Chuzom, where the Thimphu and Paro rivers meet. Here, you’ll see three unique stupas (Buddhist monuments) in Tibetan, Nepalese, and Bhutanese styles. Before reaching Chuzom, you’ll also catch a glimpse of Tschogang Lhakhang, a 15th-century private temple known as the “Temple of the Excellent Horse.”

Upon arrival in Thimphu, check into your hotel and relax. With a population of about 90,000, Thimphu is a fascinating blend of modern development and ancient traditions—and uniquely, it remains one of the only capital cities in the world without traffic lights!

Explore Thimphu’s Cultural Landmarks

  • Trashichhoedzong: Visit this impressive fortress-monastery, home to Bhutan’s Secretariat, the Throne Room of the King, and various government offices. It also serves as the summer residence of the Chief Abbot and central monk body.
  • Thimphu Main Street & Local Crafts Bazaar: Stroll through the bustling streets, visit the market area, and explore traditional Bhutanese craftsmanship. You’ll find handwoven textiles, Thangkha paintings, intricate masks, ceramics, wood carvings, and jewelry—perfect souvenirs to take home!

Start your day with a delicious Bhutanese breakfast before heading out to explore Thimphu’s top attractions.

Morning Sightseeing in Thimphu

  • National Library of Bhutan – Home to a vast collection of priceless Buddhist manuscripts, offering a glimpse into Bhutan’s rich literary heritage.
  • Institute for Zorig Chusum (Painting School) – Also known as the School of 13 Traditional Arts, where students undergo six years of training in Bhutanese arts and crafts.
  • Textile Museum – Learn about Bhutan’s unique weaving traditions and see some of the finest handwoven textiles.

Afternoon Excursion to Pangri Zampa Monastery

After lunch, take a short 15 km drive north of Thimphu to Pangri Zampa, one of Bhutan’s oldest monasteries, built in the 16th century. This sacred site is also a monastic school, where young Buddhist monks study Lamaism and astrology based on Buddhist philosophy.

Visit Buddha Point (Kuensel Phodrang)

A short drive from the city center takes you to Buddha Point, home to Bhutan’s largest Buddha statue. From here, enjoy a panoramic view of Thimphu Valley, take a peaceful walk around the site, and offer prayers for good fortune.

King’s Memorial Chorten – A Symbol of Peace

Conclude your day with a visit to the King’s Memorial Chorten, a sacred monument built in memory of His Majesty Jigme Dorji Wangchuk, Bhutan’s Third King and the “Father of Modern Bhutan”. This iconic landmark, built in 1974, is a center for spiritual devotion, where locals circumambulate, spin prayer wheels, and chant Buddhist mantras for world peace and prosperity.

End your day soaking in the spiritual and cultural essence of Thimphu before returning to your hotel.

After a hearty breakfast at your hotel, embark on a picturesque drive from Thimphu to Punakha (75 km / 3 hours), crossing the breathtaking Dochula Pass (3,080m). This high mountain pass is adorned with 108 memorial stupas and colorful prayer flags, creating a serene spiritual atmosphere. On a clear day, you can enjoy stunning panoramic views of the Eastern Himalayas, making it one of the most scenic spots in Bhutan.

Explore Punakha Dzong – Bhutan’s Iconic Fortress

Upon arrival in Punakha, check into your hotel and visit the magnificent Punakha Dzong, one of the most beautiful and historically significant fortresses in Bhutan. Built at the confluence of the Pho Chhu (Male River) and Mo Chhu (Female River), this grand structure served as Bhutan’s capital until 1955 and remains the winter residence of the central monk body.

Chimi Lhakhang – The Temple of Fertility

Later, take a short drive and begin a gentle 1.5-hour walk through lush paddy fields and traditional Bhutanese villages to reach Chimi Lhakhang, also known as the Temple of Fertility. Perched on a hillock in the center of the valley, this sacred site is dedicated to Lama Drukpa Kunley, the "Divine Madman" of Bhutan. It is widely believed that couples struggling with fertility who pray at this temple are often blessed with a child. Walking through the nearby village of Pana ("field") offers a unique opportunity to observe authentic Bhutanese rural life.

Evening Stroll by the River

Wrap up your day with a relaxing evening in Punakha, exploring the village by the riverside, soaking in the peaceful atmosphere, and interacting with the friendly locals.

Start your day with a scenic hike along the banks of the Mo Chhu River, passing through lush fields of chilies, cabbages, and rice paddies. Your destination is the magnificent Khamsum Yuelley Namgyal Chorten, a stunning hilltop monument built by the Queen Mother and consecrated in 1999. This beautifully crafted stupa was constructed to bring peace and harmony to the world and offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Punakha Valley from the top.

Visit Sangchhen Dorji Lhuendrup Lhakhang Nunnery

Later, visit the Sangchhen Dorji Lhuendrup Lhakhang Nunnery, a peaceful retreat perched on a ridge surrounded by pine trees, overlooking the valleys of Punakha and Wangdue Phodrang. This sacred temple is home to a 14-foot bronze statue of Avalokiteshvara (Chenrezig Chagtong Chentong), one of the largest in Bhutan, handcrafted by skilled Bhutanese artisans. The temple also houses statues of Guru Padmasambhava, Gautama Buddha, Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel, the 21 Taras, and the Buddha of Longevity (Tsepamay).

Beyond its religious significance, the nunnery serves as a learning and meditation center for Buddhist nuns, providing training in tailoring, embroidery, statue-making, and Thangka painting. The serene surroundings and spiritual ambiance make this a perfect place for reflection and tranquility.

After breakfast, check out from your hotel and embark on a picturesque drive to Paro along Bhutan’s scenic highways. En route, visit the historic Simtokha Dzong, the oldest fortress in Bhutan, built in 1627. Today, it serves as a School for Buddhist Studies, preserving ancient scriptures and teachings.

Explore Paro’s Rich Heritage

Hike to Tiger’s Nest Monastery (Taktshang Monastery)

Start your day with an unforgettable hike to Tiger’s Nest Monastery (Taktshang Monastery), one of Bhutan’s most iconic landmarks. This sacred monastery is perched on a cliffside, 900 meters above Paro Valley, offering breathtaking views.

  • The hike takes around 5 hours (round trip), passing through lush pine forests and scenic trails.
  • According to legend, Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) flew here on the back of a tigress and meditated in a cave, giving the monastery its name, ‘Tiger’s Nest’.
  • A spiritual pilgrimage for Bhutanese people, the site was first visited by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal in 1646 and remains an essential destination for Buddhists worldwide.
  • After a fire in 1998, the monastery was carefully restored to its original glory, preserving its historic and religious significance.

Visit Drukgyel Dzong – The Fortress of Victory

In the afternoon, take a scenic drive to Drukgyel Dzong, a historic fortress that once defended Bhutan from Tibetan invasions. Although now in ruins, the site offers a glimpse into Bhutan’s warrior past and provides stunning views of Mount Jomolhari (7,326m), the “Mountain of the Goddess”.

Kyichu Lhakhang – One of Bhutan’s Oldest Temples

Conclude your day with a visit to Kyichu Lhakhang, a 7th-century temple built by Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo. As one of Bhutan’s oldest and holiest temples, Kyichu Lhakhang marks the beginning of Buddhism in Bhutan and houses ancient relics, sacred statues, and beautiful murals.

TIPPING

Tips are appreciated by your support team after the trip. Tips are not mandatory in Nepal but recommended. The amount depends on your budget and appreciation of their work. Where restaurant meals are involved, the tipping is usually 10% of the bill. We would like to request all travelers to give tips separately for driver & guide. Our suggestion is US$ 5 per day by per tourist to driver if same driver is there for whole trip & US$ 10 per day to guide.

VISA

All visitors except the Indian nationals must hold passport and valid visa. Visa can be obtained at the Nepalese diplomatic missions and consulates abroad. Visa is also issued at the entry points. It can be extended at the Department of Immigration, Bhrikutimandap, Kathmandu. Children under 10 years need not pay any visa fee. People willing to get entry Visa at the airport or any of the land entry points are required to fill a visa form with passport photograph. Only People of these countries do not get visa on arrival at the immigration entry points of Nepal: - Nigeria, Ghana, Zimbabwe, Swaziland, Cameroon, Somalia, Liberia, Ethiopia, Iraq, and Palestine, Afghanistan. Tourist Visa Extension

* Visa extension fee for 15 days or less is US $ 45 or equivalent convertible currency and visa extension fee for more than 15 days is US$ 3 per day. 5 USD per day as late fine in the case of delay

* Tourist visa can be extended for a maximum period of 150 days in a single visa year (January – December).

Gratis Visa is issued free of cost in case of following categories of Visa applicants:

Children below 10 years (except US citizens)

Up to 30 days for SAARC Citizen (except Afghanistan) visiting Nepal for the first time in a given visa year.  Afghan citizens are eligible for Gratis Visa on Arrival only upon the recommendation of Department of Immigration. If you are an Afghan citizen, you can request concerned institution inviting you to Nepal for necessary paperwork with Department of Immigration to get you Gratis Visa ‘On Arrival’.

The following documents are required to proceed with a Bhutan visa:

  1. A digital copy of a valid passport
  2. A recent digital passport-sized photo
  3. Valid travel insurance for the duration of your trip

PASSPORT AND VISAS:

You must carry a valid passport and have obtained all of the appropriate visas, permits and certificates for the countries in which you will visit during your trip. Your passport must be valid for six months beyond the duration of the trip. It is your responsibility to ensure that you are in possession of the correct visas, permits and certificates for your trip; please refer to the Trip Notes for details. We are not responsible if you are refused entry to a country because you lack the correct passport, visa or other travel documentation.

15-29 days before the “Trip Start Day” a fee of 30%
7-14 days before the “Trip Start Day” a fee of 60%
